Article 110 26 in the national electrical code nec contains specifications for the working space dimensions required around all electrical equipment.

The national electric code nec includes the minimum standards for installing a circuit breaker panel box. One way to help safeguard people from hazards arising from electricity use is to ensure there is sufficient working space in front of and around electrical equipment. A permanent platform must be below the panel box if the top circuit breaker exceeds this specific height. The national electrical code makes no distinction between a panelboard and a load center.

Often a commercial building will have a main electrical service room and smaller electrical rooms on other floors. A panelboard also sometimes referred to as a load center is an enclosure which contains overcurrent devices such as fuses or circuit breakers. A height limit applies to mounting a panel box. This working space also shall be maintained to permit ready and safe.

In a commercial building it is typical for space to be dedicated for electrical panels and equipment.
